Clay County is located one hour southwest of Indianapolis (55 miles) and a 20 minute drive east of Terre Haute in West Central Indiana.

The county is rural in nature with a current population estimated at 26,780. Brazil is the county seat with a population of 8,500. Located literally at the "Crossroads of America", it places the United States at company's doorstep and affords many efficiencies in marketing products.

Government and Related Services

Clay County is governed by a three member County Commission and a seven member County Council. The City of Brazil, the county seat, is a third class city governed by a mayor and a five member City Council. A Planning and Zoning Board is also appointed for the purpose of overseeing and enforcing various planning and zoning ordinances. The remaining towns in Clay County are governed by Town Boards.

Police protection is provided by a 10 member county force and a twelve member city force as well as five Indiana State Police Officers. The County Sheriff's eight reserve officers and a volunteer city patrol group are also available in emergencies, Fire protection is provided to the City of Brazil by a twelve member Force with Class VII insurance rating.

The City of Brazil provides garbage pickup service to all city residents as well as curb side recycling. Businesses and county residents rely on private collectors.

Utilities

Electricity - Cinergy/PSI is an investor owned energy supplier providing service to over 636,000 customers in Indiana and to over 10,000 customers in Clay County. Part of the southern half of the county is served by the Utilities District of Western Indiana which is a member of the Hoosier Energy Network.

Water - Brazil City Water Works supplies water to Brazil, Center Point, Carbon, Harmony and Knightsville. Clay City and Staunton have independent water systems.

Sewage Treatment - Private septic systems are used throughout the county. Brazil municipal sewage has a five million gallon per day capacity (50% peak usage). The towns of Harmony and Knightsville utilize the Brazil facilities. Center Point, Carbon and Staunton have independent systems.

Natural Gas - Provided by Indiana Gas Company, Inc. with an energy rating of 1020 BTU's.
