The Clay County Economic Development Organization in cooperation with the school system in Clay County and various industries in the county, developed a model workforce development and School-to-Work/Careers program.

This program was developed to answer challenges from the business community that the local workforce needs better preparation for the work place and was designed to focus on the "real world of work"

This program is directed toward students who may not continue with higher education immediately upon high school graduation. It is essential to prepare these students for success.

The Workforce Council determined that the first priority was to fill an information gap; provide educators with information regarding the skills needed, and the opportunities offered by local industry. The educators also shared their concerns with the representatives of the business community.

Several basic skills were identified as required by industry for students to enter the job market:

The first step in closing the communication gap between business and Schools has been to provide opportunities for teachers to visit the work place and observe the way in which local businesses apply the skills listed. Business and industry are the bonding factor between teachers and educators. Experiencing the practical application of subjects gives teachers many creative ideas as to how they each may modify their curriculum to enable students to effectively perform in the work world. Educators during in-service days visit with the local industries and hold focus groups to exchange information. Annual industry visits by educators are essential communication vehicles and a large part of the Clay County Workforce Development Program.
